Birch wood furniture, Grand Canape loveseat
The late Eighteenth century was a revolutionary period for furniture in Great Britain. Imports of mahogany, an ideal material for carving, allowed great innovations in style. The influences of Italian, French, and even Chinese forms inspired those innovations more abundantly than has been seen before or since. When George III ascended the throne in 1760 the changes were well underway, with Thomas Chippendale leading the way. His Gentlemen and Cabinet-Maker's Director, published in 1754, illustrates the adaptation of the new styles to functions of all kinds. By the 1770's they were being produced in the new world as well. This beautiful birch wood grand canape loveseat exemplifies that era being carefully modeled after the original.

We bring these important pieces, as well as other outstanding styles in traditional mahogany to you. Each piece is built by hand, and carved by hand, from plantation-grown mahogany solids and veneers. Joints are traditional mortise-and-tenon and dovetail. Brass fittings are hand-cast as well. Every item, from our early Georgian bench to our early 20th century stacking bookcase, is carefully modeled after the original.

Take time to browse through the pieces in this line, and also to peruse the texts of authorities on the Georgian period as well as Chippendale's own drawings.
