The sphinx, the parthenon, lions, and serpents: the symbolic life of Western civilization is rich with these motifs, and the great stylistic periods all refer back to these symbols in their ornamentation. The classic furniture of the European continent evokes old memories of a symbol-filled cultural life, transcending the passing of nations and centuries. Here are the marvelous heavy pieces of the renaissance, and the grace of the French Empire. Here are the excesses of Louis XV and the populism of Beidermeier. The Continental Collection, celebrating the world's most enduring styles. An elegant mix of furniture from the periods of Louis XV and XVI, the French Empire, Regency, Beidermeier and more. Every piece is constructed by hand from fine plantation-grown hardwoods, both solids and veneers. Joinery follows the methods of the old-world craftsmen who once constructed these pieces for the most discriminating of clients. Mature professionals execute carved details by hand to bring the classic design elements to life. The late Eighteenth
century was a revolutionary period for furniture in Great Britain. Imports
of mahogany, an ideal material for carving, allowed great innovations in
style. The influences of Italian, French, and even Chinese forms inspired
those innovations more abundantly than has been seen before or since. When
George III ascended the throne in 1760 the changes were well underway,
with Thomas Chippendale leading the way. His Gentlemen and Cabinet-Maker's
Director, published in 1754, illustrates the adaptation of the new styles
to functions of all kinds. By the 1770's they were being produced in the
new world as well.
Each piece
is finished by hand in a painstaking process that creates the warm heirloom
look these items deserve.
