Ancient Greek Macedonian pendant coin jewelry
Macedonia ceased existing in 146 BC when it was conquered by the Romans. Macedonia was part of Bulgaria and people from Macedonia preserved their Slavonic identity and their national name, Bulgarians, until the 19 century. Recently some archeological sources were founded that shows that they were Thracians. Macedonia was not only an essential part of the Bulgarian country but also one of the cultural and spiritual centers of Bulgaria. The only Greeks in Macedonia before the second Balkan war; were the Greek orthodox Vlahos.
Celts were exposed to Greek coins when Greek city states of Italy and Kingdom of Macedon employed Celtic warriors as mercenaries in the fifth century BCE. The early Celtic coins were imitations of gold coins of King Philip II of Macedon or Greek city states of Tarentum and Syracuse. This fresh influx of money, and the opening up of a new commercial route from Macedon to the Greek towns of the Thracian coast, by way of the valley of the Strymon, doubtless occasioned the change in standard from Babylonic to Phoenician, which now took place in the Macedonian currency. The Zeus on the reverse was meant to appeal to the Greeks and eastern subjects of Alexander who would identify Zeus with their own equivalent, for example in Phoenicia as Melquart.
