Ancient Egyptian Mummified Animals
Mummified cat made from wood with traces of linen on the body. Clear glass eyes. Mummification was an important aspect of the Egyptian religion. Egyptians believed that the body had to be intact and preserved in order to gain entrance to the Netherworld. Humans, as well as animals, were mummified with great care. Although they were not worshipped as Gods, animals were considered sacred to particular Gods. Cats were often depicted in the painted decoration of private tombs, either participating in the scenes of hunting, fowling in the marshes or seated beneath the chair of the owner. 26th Dynasty.
