Treasures of the World Artifact Spotlight:
Egyptian Scarab
Carved light green limestone heart scarab, once placed on the throat, chest, or heart of the mummy. A vertical line of hieroglyphs on the top with the Sun God Ra holding an Ankh, the Egyptian symbol of life. Six lines of hieroglyphs and a winged scarab on the bottom. Some were worn by the deceased on a necklace, or mounted in gold settings as a pectoral. Heart scarab provided the bearer with the assurance that at the final judgment as depicted in the Book of the Dead, the bearer would be found "True of Voice" and accepted into the eternal afterlife by the God Osiris. Rare. 18th Dynasty.
Ancient Egyptian Ushabtis
Faience Ushabti with hand-painted hieroglyphs to the front in black. Often called "Servants of the Afterlife," Ushabtis were placed in the tomb of the mummy and were intended to be servants that would magically come to life and do any chore the mummy might be called upon to perform in the afterlife. 18th Dynasty.
