Treasures of the World Artifact Spotlight:
Ancient Egyptian wooden Bust
Ancient Egyptian wooden bust of the Egyptian God Khnum with the Ka symbol to the top of the head and wearing a chin beard with traces of red and black. In ancient Egyptian mythology, the ka, a spiritual double, was born with every man and lived on long after he died as long as it had a place to live. The Egyptians mummified their dead because they believed the ka lived within the body of the individual and therefore needed that body after death. If the body decomposed, their spiritual double would die and the deceased would lose their chance for eternal life. Ptolemaic.
Egyptian Ushabtis
Terracotta Ushabti with traces of color to the surface. Often called "Servants of the Afterlife," Ushabtis were placed in the tomb of the Mummy and were intended to be servants that would magically come to life and do any chore the Mummy might be called upon to perform in the afterlife. Mounted on a base. 18th Dynasty.
