Treasures of the World Artifact Spotlight:
Authentic ancient artifacts Syrian cylinder seals
Black steatite cylinder seal: a hunter shoots an arrow at a fleeing animal. Drill hole for wearing. The art of the ancient Assyrian seal cutter is a combination of realism and mythology. The cylindrical seals were decorated with designs from sacred mythological tales. It is probable that seal-cutters from Babylonia passed their skills on to Assyrian seal-cutters who, in their turn, produced these seals. The earliest date can be inferred from an Assyrian seal on steatite "with an engraving of a worshipper in Assyrian costume in front of an Assyrian god" and the latest can be gathered from the coin finds of Hermaes, Maues, Azes, Rajuvala, Condophares, Kadphises, Huvishka, Spalapatideva, a Turki shahi ruler of 8th century. Assyrian culture is associated with a revitalization of Mesopotamian cylinder seal design. The genius of Assyrian art flowered in the Neo-Assyrian period, 1000-612 bc, a time of great builders. The first of the great late Assyrian kings was Ashurnasirpal II reigned 883-859 bc, who built at Nimrud ancient Kalhu or Calah of the Bible.
