Treasures of the World Artifact Spotlight:
Asian ancient statue
Ancient light green jade Kuan Yin, Chinese Goddess of Mercy, seated on a lotus base holding a stylized lotus flower, one knee up with right hand on top, the face with a serene expression, bow shaped mouth, full lips, downcast eyes, and arched eyebrows, a shrine behind her head. Traces of brown.
Greek Icons
carved wooden icon, color painted with the Baptism of Jesus. Sterling silver floral border.
Ancient Cycladic idol
Black basalt Cycladic figure of the Late Spedos Variety, the slender arms crossed left over right at the waist, the face carved, long flowing hair, stylized body. Also known as a Fiddle-Idol”, Cycladic figures are considered one of the finest products of the Bronze Age in the Cyclades, a group of fertile but dry isles off the southeastern coast of Greece in the Aegean Sea. The manufacture of these figures was simple and often depicted the abstract representation of the female form resembling a modern violin. Believing to represent death, the eyes and mouths are lacking, the arms folded, the gender perhaps representing the deceased’s wife or a Mother Goddess.
