Upper part of a wooden sarcophagus, covered with a layer of gesso, the painted face chalky, painted black eyes. The embalmed bodies of the dead were wrapped for protection before they were deposited into coffins (sarcophagi) which were usually made from wood. The mask and the sarcophagus were covered with plaster and religious motifs to help the deceased in his or her voyage. Ptolemaic
