Red clay Sumerian tablet with cuneiform writings to the front and back, the back impressed with a ruler with sphinx in hand surrounded by a circle of cuneiform. It was often the scribes' responsibility to combine small neat individual scripts into a single large tablet to cover a whole year. The texts were then attached by string to a consignment of goods in transit, sometimes reflecting workaday use such as rations of beer, bread and oil. Stretching beyond the confines of Mesopotamia itself, the messengers would run a well-organized communication network.
