Ushabtis were most often made from faience, a ceramic paste that was pressed into a mould and fired. They were produced in all sizes and range in color from bright blue to many shades of green. The smallest ones were of low quality, uninscribed and with minimal features. Larger ushabtis were usually inscribed with a magical spell in hieroglyphs and had more finely detailed features.
