There is evidence that the Egyptians intentionally produced one ’shawabti’ for every day of the year and one overseer for every ten workers; namely 401 figures composed of 365 workers and 36 foremen. It has also been suggested that the type or lack of inscription might be used to differentiate the overseers from the workers.
