Carved wooden temple guardian or Nio figure covered in gesso with traces of a gold gilding, delicately detailed mouth, nostrils and eyes. A dynamic display of power and realism characteristic of late 14th-century Japanese sculpture. Called Misshaku Kongo, the raised fist represents overt strength, the opened mouth, the cosmic sound “ah” meaning birth.
