Reminiscent of the lightning bolt that created it, fulgurites often extend many feet into the earth, solidifying and breaking into shorter pieces because of the pressure of the surrounding glass as it contracts and cools and the force exerted by the shifting sands, allowing archeologists to simply unearth them. Grains of sand from the Sahara Desert are fused to the surface.
