Black basalt Cosmetic palettes were used to grind pigments such as malachite or galena, from which eye-paint was made. This example can be dated to the Naqada II period (c. 3500 BC), by which time cosmetic palettes had almost certainly acquired ritualistic or magical connotations. On its underside, an incised row of hieroglyphics.
